Volunteer Opportunities

Make a difference by helping others grow in their English skills.

Volunteer with Purpose

Our volunteer program offers multiple ways to support English language learners through both individual and group instruction. Volunteers can serve as 1:1 tutors or teach group classes, either in person or online. Whether you’re guiding structured literacy lessons or helping someone practice conversation, you’ll receive training, resources, and ongoing support. No teaching experience is required- just a desire to help others learn and grow.

One-on-one Tutoring Opportunities

LFA offers two tutoring programs for volunteers. Volunteers meet with their students weekly for at least three months. Tutors and students can meet either in person or online. All volunteers receive an orientation prior to meeting with their student.

Conversation Partners Program
  • Conversation partners are volunteers who help English language learners improve their spoken English and learn more about life in the United States. This is a great fit for students who speak high beginner to advanced level English and primarily need help with listening and speaking skills. If you have questions about life in the United States or American culture this could be a great fit for you. Conversation partners are not expected to be experts on English grammar, but a helpful guide to using English successfully.
Literacy Program Tutoring
  • Literacy tutors work with students who want to focus on improving their reading and writing or basic English skills. This is an appropriate program for low beginner level students or any level learner who needs to improve their literacy. Literacy tutoring is curriculum driven and more structured than conversational partners tutoring. Literacy tutors are provided with a structured and progressive curriculum to best assist their students.

Group Class Teaching

Volunteer teachers have the opportunity to guide small groups of English learners in a supportive classroom setting.

  • Commit to teaching for one 12-week session
  • Choose to teach in-person or online
  • Receive curriculum, training, and teaching resources before classes begin
  • By leading a group, you’ll create an engaging learning environment where students can practice their skills, support one another, and build confidence together.
